克萊蒙費朗乍看不太美觀，一些黑呼呼的房子、有點髒亂的街道、許多外國移民，並非一般人心目中典型的法國城市模樣。從城裡就能望見不遠處的火山，和由黑色熔岩打造出的某些街角都會讓人想起西西里島的卡塔尼亞(Catania)。

在遊客中心拿了印刷精美的大地圖，按著地圖標示的三條舊城散步路線閒逛大半天後，才漸漸習慣這座城市，並開始有一些喜歡。許多年輕學生、很少遊客，街道充滿日常生活的活潑氣氛。除了黑色建築，也有色彩鮮艷的房屋點綴，新舊雜陳，從中世紀到近代各種風格都能看到。至於克萊蒙費朗的代表工業米其林輪胎我倒沒注意到。
